Editorial about Wilderness Torah on jWeekly.com

Planting our Jewish roots outdoors is a great idea

Thursday June 4th, 2009 – Editorial

We think Wilderness Torah is on to something.

Our story this week on page 4 shines a light on Wilderness Torah, a fledgling, volunteer-led  Jewish organization that is striving to make a connection between Judaism and nature — linking the two through holidays, rituals, food and outdoor encounters.

To celebrate Shavuot last week, for example, the East Bay–based group organized an all-night outdoor study session, called a Tikkun Leyl Shavuot, at a campsite in Mount Tamalpais State Park. Many of the 75 attendees had not set foot in a synagogue in years, but were thrilled to find an organization and an event that married their Jewish soul with their passion for the environment.

This mix of innovation and tradition has already caught the attention of UpStart Bay Area, a nonprofit organization that incubates Jewish ideas and helps them stand on their own two feet.

But while Wilderness Torah is getting training and support as part of UpStart’s first run in the Bay Area, like any new entity, it will need money to grow.

Imagine what a startup like Wilderness Torah could do with proper financial support: communal holiday celebrations on farms, in deserts, under redwoods; farm and garden education through a Jewish lens for children and families; a fellowship for young adults that simultaneously teaches about Judaism and sustainable agriculture.

All make the Jewish tent bigger, broader, more alive.

Clearly, organizations like Wilderness Torah could potentially transform the Jewish community. Unaffiliated individuals and families could reconnect to Judaism by getting outdoors. Where better to reinvigorate Jewish life? Nature welcomes everyone.

These are times of scarce resources. All nonprofits have felt effects of the recession. It makes sense that some established Jewish institutions might worry about precious dollars targeted for new, untested programs.

But an entity like Wilderness Torah should not be seen as competition with synagogues. Rather it is a partner, an access point, a gateway to a deeper Jewish life. Everybody wins.

Many synagogues across the Bay are already onto this trend, organizing outdoor Shabbat and Havdallah services throughout the summer. What’s unique and commendable about Wilderness Torah — and why it might appeal to a wide range of Jews — is that its focus is equal parts nature and Judaism.

Experiencing nature and Judaism in the open promotes an understanding of the world around us, and an appreciation for the spirit within. Both are crucial in these challenging times.

Judaism began under the skies. We applaud Wilderness Torah for taking a step back outside.

  27. I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

  33. This is getting a little bit more subjective, but I much rather the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has a lot more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ which let you rapidly see connected cds, songs, or other users associated to what you might be playing. Clicking on one of them will center on that item, and another set of “friends” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar performers, songs, or users. By the way, the Zune “Social” is also fantastic fun, letting you come across other people with shared likes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created depending on an combinations of what all your buddies are listening to, which can also be enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you’ll be able to prevent the public from seeing your individual listening habits should you so select.

  34. Wow! I like the post.

  35. Superb study, I just passed this onto a colleague who was doing just a little study on that. And he really purchased me lunch simply because I found it for him smile So allow me rephrase that: Thanks for lunch!

  36. I’m a little misunderstanding what exactly is shown in the article.

  37. This is what congress is worried about? How about jobs you fricktin arseholes? how about our borders? how about the economy? how about our hypocrite in chief melting the icebergs with air force 1 and 2′s exhaust. I want you folks to drive a prius while my wife(bigfoot) and I take 747′s or 4 monster helicopters to go get milk and bread….. :-)

  38. windows vpn says:

Your web filter at work will recognize the VPN eventually and block access to that address. You also run the risk of having the IP address blacklisted and then your ISP finding out you were violating your terms of use and shut off your internet.

  39. paris hilton is nothing but a little skankola, party girl with too much money and time to do nothing. that is why she is always in trouble! her friend kim kardashian did the right thing by dropping her and for the record has one of the best sex tapes of all the celebrities.

Are you f#@king with me, Jimmy? A GTA 5? I sort of guessed there would be one, but I have to know. I am still looking for the helicopter on San Andreas.

  46. I printed a lot of your blog out thanks my friend

  47. gay chat says:

See, it’s like this. If Kim Kardashian releases a tape of her doing stuff, then she’s a “porn star”. If Kim Kardashian has a private tape that she just couldn’t stop from being released, then she’s a celebrity with a “sex tape”. The fact that she gets paid for stuff on film either way doesn’t seem to matter for some reason.

  48. Whats up, I’m not sure i agree with your point about this movie starring Michael Cera and Statham was a successful movie. I just downloaded Scott Pilgrim vs. the World video online for free. The film was an action filled movie. Precisely once you have caught the best movie of the year, think again. Try this movie out: Usual Michael Cera’s action character was a awesome role plus the insane and the insidious hints of shock value.

  49. Having the body you want is hard. Some people will go all out to reach their goals. I’m not going to judge people.
