New This Year

Bring Your Own Lunch, We’ll Provide the Water!

After many years of asking each participant to bring their own 8 to 10 gallons of water, we will be providing a water truck this year! This means no stopping in Ridgecrest to fill up jugs and no wasteful plastic water containers. We are very excited about this development, and we hope you are too. You still need to bring your own 1-liter water bottles to fill up at the water truck. If you are bringing a solar shower, you will need to bring your own water for that.

Why Aren’t We Providing Lunch?

There are a few reasons we are experimenting this year with only providing breakfast, dinner, and snacks. Let us know after the festival if you think it worked!

  • People tend to eat less in the desert heat and food goes to waste. Three full meals are often too much.
  • It responds to repeated requests from participants for a more open and spacious schedule. Preparing, eating and cleaning up lunch takes hours each day.
  • It makes the jobs of the chefs and work-exchange more manageable.
  • There is a reduction in chef and food costs (which allows us to afford the water truck!)

Suggestions for Picnic Lunches

Below are some suggested items you can bring for picnic lunches. Our snack table will always be open and we will serve a hearty breakfast and dinner each day. Remember, most people eat way less in the desert heat, so you probably need less than you think. If you’d like to cook, feel free to bring a small stove, but we don’t feel it’s necessary.

All food served by Wilderness Torah is still kosher and kosher for Passover.

While we invite you to be in the Passover spirit, the food you bring does not need to be kosher since it will not be stored in the kitchen, and you will use your own personal dishes. We have a separate dish washing area for the Wilderness Torah kitchen supplies for those who would like to wash their dishes in a kosher kitchen.

We will have a snack table out at all times to supplement your lunch; it will have: matzah, nut butters, olives, labne (a soft cheese), and some fresh fruit.

You must store your food in an animal proof container like a cooler. You will need to store your food by your tent.  Refrigeration will not be available.

Lunch ideas that require no refrigeration:

  • Cans of salmon, tuna
  • Cheese (many hard cheeses are fine for a few days)
  • Dried meats/fish
  • Fruit/veggies that don’t go bad quickly like oranges, apples, bananas, carrots
  • Nuts, seeds, and dried fruits
  • A box of matzah if you really love it (we’ll have a bunch available)
  • Energy bars, fruit strips, and/or granola type bars
  • Anything canned (don’t forget a can opener)
