Our Pricing Philosophy
About our Pricing Structure and Costs
Wilderness Torah strives to provide the highest quality experience at the most affordable price possible, keeping our programs as inclusive as we can. Even the highest priced tickets are significantly under actual program costs. We feel it’s important to explain what the price of the festival includes and how we are working to keep the festival accessible.
What the money goes towards
It takes a lot of resources to create a village from scratch! The program fee includes all the background work to create the village experience and essentially everything you’ll need in the desert: delicious, organic food from Wednesday dinner to Sunday breakfast, camping, large communal shade/wind-protected structures, programming, Shabbat and Passover ritual, learning, daily meditation and yoga opportunities, and so much more. Wilderness Torah is also growing as an organization. In order to create meaningful experiences, we need to build a strong foundation for our work, pay our staff, and invest resources in our development.
How we work to reduce the cost
We are blessed to have a wonderful community of volunteers for the festival! If you are able to help with the planning as a volunteer, we are able to accomplish even more on the small budget that we have. We also offer a sliding scale range of payment. While the upper end of the scale is more reflective of the true cost of the festival, we feel it is important to allow those with less financial resources to be able to share in the same community. We thank you for looking honestly at your ability to pay as close to the high end as is possible; when you buy a higher priced ticket it allows lower-income members of our community to purchase tickets at price levels they can afford.
For those for whom the lower part of the scale is still out of reach, we make an effort to offer extensive work-exchange opportunities. These make up almost a half of all ticket sales. People who pay the high end of the sliding scale help subsidize this possibility for full inclusion of our broader community, regardless of financial means.
If you are able, you can also make a tax-deductible donation in addition to your program fee to help us continue to offer affordable programs.
While there is a constant effort to find grants and individual contributions to subsidize the cost of programs, it is not sustainable or possible to rely on these contributions. The price of everything from gasoline to food to the campsite is constantly on the rise. In addition, we are working to make the festival more accessible to families with more wind and shade structures, as well as a more robust communal meeting space. While we are working hard to search for donations, it is inevitable that the cost of the program will rise as we continue to search for ways to make the festival more inclusive of all ages, especially our children and our elders, two essential components of a thriving community.
How it compares to other festivals
This festival is a great bargain when compared to other festivals of similar length. Passover in the Desert includes a professionally prepared menu of fresh, organic, delicious food, a broad array of insightful classes taught by exceptional teachers, an inspiring community, caring health services, inclusive, unique, and profound ritual and prayer, and more. At other events of similar length, camping and nourishing food are often not included in the program fee. Commercial festivals are also able to decrease costs through corporate sponsorships.
