Shavuot on the Mountain
May 25-28th, 2012

Join us Memorial Day weekend for a Shabbat and Shavuot* camping festival in Anthony Chabot Regional Park in Oakland.  Celebrate, learn, and connect with the natural world and community…

We are still in need of more work exchange for set up,  break down, kitchen, and children’s program!

*Shavuot marks the harvest of the season’s first fruits, the moment when Moses received the Ten Commandments on Mt. Sinai, and it’s a great time in general to celebrate revelation!

What to Expect…

On Friday night and Saturday we’ll celebrate Shabbat with inclusive Shabbat prayer options, nature connection activities, delicious food, and time to relax with friends new and old.

The pinnacle moment will be the Saturday night Tikkun Leyl Shavuot (all night learning session). Through experiential workshops, music-making, and traditional study sessions, we will immerse ourselves in the essence of the revelation of the receiving of the Torah.  The all-night gathering is punctuated by a community-wide under-the-stars experience at midnight to open us to our own personal revelation, and culminates with a sunrise shacharit (prayer) and Torah service. (Staying up all night totally optional!).

Sunday through Monday morning, we’ll relax and recuperate, enjoy the natural beauty of the East Bay Hills and participate in more nature connection activities and skills sessions.

To celebrate the bikkurim (first fruits of the harvest), we will enjoy eco-kosher, local, seasonal, organic food prepared fresh in camp.

All of our teachings and workshops come from the participant community! Do you have something to offer?

We are proud to acknowledge our co-sponsors for this year’s festival: Building Jewish Bridges, Nehirim, the PJ Library, and The Jewish Federation of the Greater East Bay

*This year Shavuot falls on a three-day weekend, and Shavuot itself begins on Saturday night.  In previous years, we have offered a one-night celebration, but this year we are excited to invite you to join us for the whole weekend!

While we encourage you to join us for the entire gathering, you can see our registration page for options to attend for part of the weekend.

Everyone is welcome at Wilderness Torah events.  We create pluralistic, multi-generational community celebrations to reconnect us to the earth-based traditions of Judaism. We welcome Jews, non-Jews, interfaith couples, the GLBTQ community, and people of color. We do our best to offer a range of activities so that people of all backgrounds and experience levels can plug in.

Participants should be comfortable in the outdoors and committed to a shared group experience. Please join us to learn about and celebrate the holiday of Shavuot!  Please see our Holy Day Observance page for info about Chag Observance.
